    FAQ: Single, twin-share and more

    What is twin-share, triple-share and quad-share?

The share-basis is about accommodation pricing. It does not mean that you share a room with a stranger.

"Twin-share" is where two people occupy a hotel room (open-plan style) or other accommodation such as an apartment, usually a couple or two friends. This is the normal way accommodation is priced. The price is shared between two people. Most accommodation properties (eg. hotels) offer rooms with king, queen or double beds. Most offer the option of "twin" beds as well which actually means two single beds to accommodate singles sharing, couples wanting space and so-on.

"Triple share" is where three people occupy the accommodation and share the price. "Quad-share" is where four people occupy the accommodation and share the price. Family apartments and hotel rooms usually include a king, queen or double bed and one or more single beds to handle triple and quad-share arrangements. Sometimes other bedding configurations are available as well.

    What is a seasonal adjustment?

Some accommodation providers, especially in very popular holiday locations, have higher room rates for busy holiday periods (usually spring and summer holidays). We must make an allowance for those price variations if applicable.

    What is a single supplement?

A "single supplement" applies to single travellers who want a room to themselves. Because the price is not shared, a "single supplement" applies. This additional amount is based on the single covering the entire accommodation component of the trip that would normally be split between two or more people.

    Your Itinerary

One of the interesting things about touring the South Island of New Zealand is the number of little places you can visit on your way to your next stop. It’s about contrasts between oceans, rivers, gorges, mountains, glaciers, towns and lakes. As you drive this trip you’ll be able to indulge just about any area of interest from wineries to fly fishing, hiking to relaxing. You can do as much or as little as you want on this flexible trip that takes in many of the South Island’s favourite places.

CHRISTCHURCH - TEMUKA [TIMARU] (2 NIGHTS)

The second largest city in Canterbury, Timaru sits about midway between Christchurch and Dunedin. It has everything you need for a pleasant stay. Caroline Bay has a safe swimming beach, botanic gardens, a landscaped piazza and wonderful walks. Every year, generations of kiwis and expats flock to here for the summer carnival.

    About today:

    Ollie & Pam's farmstay

    Visit Ollie and Pam's place

After a hearty breakfast and fond farewells, you’ll head south today to the town of Temuka, just north of Timaru. Along the way drop into Trotts Garden at Ashburton. Ashburton has a strong aviation history, being a training base in World War 2. There were 50 Tiger Moths based there. The original tarmac and tie-down rings are still there to this day. These helped to secure the planes from strong local winds. The Ashburton Aviation Museum is well worth a visit.

Also, there’s the amazing Plains Railway & Historical Museum which was founded by the Ashburton Railway & Preservation Society in 1971 to preserve the Mid-Canterbury regions past. This is home to Historic Steam Loco's: Ja1260, K88 and A64 plus a collection of shunters. A 2.5-kilometer vintage railway features amongst a recreated village, complete with replica and authentic buildings and a vast rural history display ranging from horse drawn gigs and wagons to tractors. Open days run from September to May.

    Ollie & Pam’s Place:

Your hosts Ollie & Pam and two resident cats warmly invite you to share their historic house and twenty-acre farmlet. Their B&B farmstay are located in an ideal location close to everything throughout South Canterbury, New Zealand, surrounded by beautiful scenery and friendly people.

The historic farmhouse was once the original post office in the town of Temuka, built in 1876 and was moved to its current site in 1904. The house has recently been renovated bringing it into the 21st century for your comfort, whilst maintaining its old-world charm.

There are two well-appointed guest rooms available, each with super king-sized beds, their own en- suite and private TV, wireless broadband is also available for guest use. For those who wish, luxuriate in a hot bath in the master bathroom or make use of the outdoor spa pool. There is also a guest lounge with Sky TV and a computer.

Enjoy a continental or full-cooked breakfast in the dining room or on the expansive deck. The larder is stocked with locally grown produce along with their own handcrafted preserves. Evening meals are available on request.

    TIMARU

    About today:

    Blue penguins

Come see the little blue penguins

    This morning:

Meet Ollie & Pam’s small dairy herd. The cows are machine-milked during the summer season and the dairy goats are hand milked. Visit your hosts’ friendly flock of chickens at the hen house and collect your own eggs for breakfast or just go for a walk with Molly, their border collie.

    This evening:

Timaru, just 20 minutes’ south is one of New Zealand's most underrated seaside cities, built around the golden sands of Caroline Bay. The beach and adjoining park are fringed by busy cafes, gardens, and are also home to a very rare resident: the little blue penguin.

These penguins have a permanent colony on the beach, and every night a procession of curious locals and tourists head down to the waterfront to witness a little blue miracle – the smallest penguins in the world, surfing ashore and waddling to their nests. The penguins live around Marine Parade, next to the port.

    Other activities:

For the freshwater fishing enthusiast, the rivers and streams in South Canterbury abound with trout and salmon. On the farmlet’s back boundary is the Waihi River. You can climb over the style and cast your fly. The farmstay is also situated within easy driving distance of several ski fields.

There are many places you can go mountain biking, hiking, kayaking and much more.

    • Discover all about Temuka’s history at the local museum. The museum is housed in the former courthouse which opened in 1901.
    • Temuka pottery is well known in NZ. The Temuka pottery shop is a great place to purchase that special gift.
    • Play a round of golf on the local 18-hole golf course. This is a picturesque course with excellent greens and well-watered fairways.
    • Temuka’s “domain” park is a tranquil place to spend some time, surrounded by many beautiful trees.
